Kapporos - fowl vs. funds was created by Altgold
What is the Ashkenazic practice regarding Kapporos? Can one substitute money for chickens?

The minhog was always to use chickens (also in the Rodelheim machzorim no other option is mentioned).
In Lithuania, the Chayei Odom started the minhog of using money instead of chickens, but this did not affect Ashkenaz, and until the first world war everyone used chickens. Around the time of the Nazis, it was very hard to use chickens for Kaporos, so then they relied on the Chayei Odom and used money in Ashkenaz.
