I heard that there is a yekish minhog to light the shabos candles, and not make the brocho. And before the kidush, the mother says the brocho.
This is very strange. Does it exist?

I know that my mother a"h would light on yom tov right before kiddush and make the brocho (without shehecheyanu) so the shehecheyanu of kiddush was "near" her brocho (and she could answer amen to it without a hefsek). Could this be the source of what you heard??

The Brocho on Nerous Shabbos was done just after they were lit. Nerous Yom Tov were lit in most places in Ashkenaz just before the Seudoh, and the common Minhag was that both Brochous were said then, even though Shehecheyonu will be said in the Kiddush.
