How does one attain the title of 'Chaver' and what is its significance? Where does it come from?

Originally, Chover was a title given to someone who learned in Yeshivah for a few years and was able to continue learning by himself. Moreinu was a title given to someone who is able to be מורה הוראה and to pasken in halochic questions.
Today these titles are given differently. Our Rov in KAYJ has not given yet such a title. I would be very happy to hear from other Kehillos how they have these titles given out.

My understanding is that these titles are no longer given out at all.

I heard from my father that In the past "Chover" was given to someone who knew how to learn more than Hamon ha'am. In such a case he would get a handwritten notice from the Rav saying he was given the title "Chover", and he would get an aliyah the next Shabbos if possible.

Today it is given to someone who did a lot for the shul - usually voluntarily, usually on his 60th birthday or any other special occasion. It also is given to someone who learned a few years after high school (if he didn't get smicho) if the Rav is his Mesader Kidushin. In that case the Rov just writes in his Kessuboh that he is a "Chover".

Would the title be bestowed on someone who is already a Rov?

According to Minhag Ashkenaz a Rov gets the title of Moreinu, and one who has Moreinu does not get the lower title of Chover.

I am trying to find the origin (when, where, by whom) of the use of Chover. I have several sources but none seem to agree with each other. I am also trying to find out the time and reason and conditions under which Rav Breuer started to grant a Chover to many of his congregants, probably in the 1950's. Unfortunately here in New York the older people do not live anymore, and the younger people, even those who have the title, have never given it any thought.

In the 14th century, the giving of Chover and Moreinu started. Chover was a title given to someone who learned in Yeshivah for a few years and was able to continue learning by himself, and Moreinu was a title given to someone who is able to be מורה הוראה and to pasken in halochic questions.
In the 19th century the big Yeshivos in Germany were closed, and there were not as many people who would deserve Chover according to this criteria, so Chover was given to whoever would help and contribute to the community.

Can the "Chaver" title be awarded posthumously (after a person has been niftar), as an added zechus for the deceased?

The latest time we find the title of "chover" granted to a person, is before his Kevuroh, (when physically he or his body is still with us).
